FAQ

A hair system (also called a hair replacement system, hair prosthesis, or toupee) is a custom-fit hairpiece designed to cover thinning or balding areas and blend seamlessly with your natural hair, or to replace it entirely. Unlike a traditional wig, modern hair systems use fine, low-profile bases that sit closely to the scalp for a natural, undetectable look.

They're related, but not identical. "Wig" is often used for a full head covering, while "hair system" or "hair prosthesis" typically refers to a piece designed to closely match natural hair growth and blend with existing hair, offering a more seamless, everyday-wear result. Unlike a wig, which has to be taken off to shower, sleep and so on, a hair system doesn't have those limits and can go with you through everyday activities such as sport, the sea or the pool, with the right care.

Yes. Every Hair In Head system is made with 100% natural human hair, and we never use synthetic fibre or animal hair. Depending on the product, we use European virgin hair for women's hair systems, partial and full, and European virgin or Indian treated hair for men's partial hair systems, each chosen for how it moves, holds colour and wears over time.

All our hair systems use a thin, lightweight polyurethane base, designed to sit close to the scalp and stay undetectable even up close. It's the same base across the whole range, for men and for women, so you always know what to expect in terms of comfort, natural results and durability.

Hair systems attach using either double-sided adhesive tape or a medical-grade bonding adhesive, both applied directly to the base and your scalp. Both methods are simple to apply at home once you're familiar with the process, and we provide guidance to help you choose and use the right one for your skin and lifestyle. We also supply a dedicated remover, so taking the hair system off is easy.

Yes. Our hair systems are designed for self-application at home, without needing a stylist or salon visit. We provide guidance to help you fit it correctly from the start, and most customers find the process becomes quick and easy after their first couple of applications.

No. A well-fitted hair system shouldn't feel like a foreign object on your head. With a fine, lightweight 5mm base and a breathable construction, our hair systems are designed to sit comfortably against the scalp all day, to the point most wearers simply forget it's there.

True allergic reactions to hair system bases are rare. The main thing to watch for is irritation from reduced airflow, which can happen with any base material, including thicker or less breathable ones, if worn for long periods without proper scalp hygiene. Choosing a breathable base and following basic scalp care (cleaning underneath regularly, giving your scalp rest days) minimizes this risk.

When the right base, hair colour, density and hairline style are chosen, a quality hair system is designed to be undetectable, even close up. The key is choosing the correct product for your skin tone, hair texture and lifestyle, and our product pages and customer service team are there to help you get this right.

A quality, thin-based hair system is designed to be imperceptible to the touch as well as to the eye. It should feel like your own scalp and hair, not like wearing something separate, which is one of the reasons base thickness matters so much, a finer base simply disappears against the skin.

Yes. Our hair systems are made with a soft, graduated, asymmetric hairline rather than a stiff, uniform edge, so they can be cut, styled and even brushed straight back, just like natural hair. This is very different from lower-quality systems with a rigid "horseshoe" hairline that limits how you can wear it.

It can, usually at the front hairline or edges, if the base and adhesive aren't matched correctly to your skin and lifestyle. A more flexible base tends to move naturally with your face, while a stronger or weaker adhesive may suit different skin types and sweat levels. If you notice lifting, it's usually a sign to check your attachment method or reapply, and our customer service team can help you find the right combination.

Yes. For application you can use double-sided tape or an adhesive, both supplied by us, even in combination if you prefer. On your own, roughly every 20–30 days, the routine is simple. Remove the hair system using the dedicated remover we supply, clean your scalp thoroughly, shampoo the hair system itself, then reapply fresh tape or adhesive and put it back on. Once that's done, it stays neatly in place for another 20–30 days before the cycle repeats. In hotter weather or with heavier sweating, you may want to clean and reapply a little more often.

On average, a hair system lasts around 8–10 months with proper care, though this varies from person to person. Depending on how it's worn and cared for, some wearers get as little as 6 months out of a system, while others get 12 months or more, even up to around 14 months. Lifespan depends on the base type, hair quality and how well it's looked after, and many wearers find that alternating between two hair systems, rather than wearing the same one every single day, helps each one last longer by giving it regular rest between wears. Gentle washing and brushing (avoiding rough, rotational movements) also helps preserve the hair and base over time.

Yes. There's no real limitation on activity, and many wearers exercise, swim and play sport regularly with their hair system on, without issue. Just make sure your base and adhesive are suited to higher sweat levels if you're very active, and clean and reapply a little more often if needed.

Hair systems are widely used for pattern hair loss, thinning, receding hairlines and alopecia. Many people also choose them during and after chemotherapy treatment. Because the scalp can be more sensitive at this stage, we recommend talking to your doctor first. If you have any other specific scalp or skin condition, we recommend speaking with a doctor or dermatologist before use, since our hair systems are cosmetic products rather than medical devices (unless stated otherwise on the individual product page).

Two things, mainly, base size and hair quality. Our systems use a fine 5mm polyurethane base membrane, thinner and smaller than many standard hairpieces, so they sit closer to the scalp, feel lighter, and are easier to apply yourself at home. We also use 100% natural human hair, never synthetic fibre, European virgin hair for women's hair systems, partial and full, and European virgin or Indian treated hair for men's partial hair systems.

Customer Service & Ordering FAQs

We ship internationally to a select list of countries *[full country list to be added here once available]*. See the delivery options at checkout for the countries we serve. We do not sell within Italy.

Unlike fully bespoke hair systems, which can take months to hand-make to a custom mould, we only list hair systems that are already made and ready to ship. Your order leaves our warehouse within 24 hours, with no production wait at all. See below for how long delivery itself takes.

We ship with DHL. Express (air) shipments typically arrive within 24–72 business hours within Europe, or around 3 business days for the rest of the world. Economy (road) shipments to Europe typically take around 2–7 business days. These timeframes are indicative and may vary with customs checks or courier delays.

We accept PayPal, credit/debit card, bank transfer, Klarna, and other instalment payment options where available.

Because hair systems come into direct contact with the scalp, they're sealed for hygiene reasons, and once the seal is broken, the product can no longer be returned under standard withdrawal rights. As long as the packaging and seal remain intact, EU customers have 14 days to withdraw from their purchase under standard consumer protection rules. We also offer an additional 30-day commercial return window for unopened, unused products in original packaging, for customers who simply change their mind (return shipping is at the customer's cost in that case).

If a product is defective or an error is on our side, we'll arrange the return and cover the shipping costs. Please check your package on delivery and report any visible damage to the courier immediately. Contact us at info@hairinhead.com and we'll take it from there.

Yes. EU customers benefit from a statutory conformity warranty covering defects that exist at delivery and appear within 2 years, alongside our own commitment to handle any product issue in good faith, wherever you're based.
